Plans and maps of the General land survey (Russia Empire, XVIII-XX c.)
Surveying - measures to establish the exact boundaries of individual holdings, carried out in the Russian Empire from the middle of the XVIII century until the beginning of XX century. Extant materials of the general land survey are different plans of land (from one parcel till to large administrative divisions), economic notes to the plans, which contain information about domains, lands belonging to individual villages, the villages, as well as information about the occupations of the population, boundary books, which contain the description of the boundaries of a site and field notes containing various documents that make up directly in surveying, for example, boundary moves, controversy, advertisements owners, the oath of witnesses persons.
Different sources is controversial - whether maps and plans relating to the maps and plans of the general surveying on territories to west from St. Petersburg, Vitebsk, Molodechno provinces (see the diagram below, which shows area of the General land survey before 1822) - i.e. on territories of Livonia, Curonia, proivinces of Vilnius, Kaunas?
The answer is simple - the plans and maps (as well as economic notes, field notes ...) showing the exact boundaries of individual holdings are (or have been published and preserved). However maps and plans showing the exact boundaries of individual holdings on Vilnius, Kaunas provinces were published later - in the XIX century, some ownership plans were published from the end of XVIII century. It should be emphasized that the plans and maps showing the exact boundaries of individual holdings were also published and before the partition the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
